The Design Process, Demystified

One of the most common things I hear from clients before we start working together is some version of: “I don’t really know what to expect.”
That’s a reasonable thing to feel. Design projects involve a lot of moving parts, a lot of decisions, and a timeline that can stretch from an initial conversation all the way through construction. Without a clear picture of how the process works, it can feel like stepping into the unknown.
That’s exactly why I created this visual — a page from a client resource manual I’ve been developing for Louann Wright Design.
The Process
1. Discovery Call
Every project begins with a conversation about your goals, challenges, vision, and project expectations. This is where we figure out whether we’re a good fit and what the work ahead actually involves.
Proposal Approval
Once we’ve aligned on scope, timeline, and investment, you sign off on the proposal and the project commences.
2. Pre-Design
Visioning, site review, and zoning. We establish goals, lifestyle needs, and aesthetic direction before a single line is drawn.
3. Schematic Design (SD)
Concepts, layouts, massing studies, spatial flow, and early architectural character. This is the exploration phase where possibilities open up.
4. Design Development (DD)
Refinement of materials, systems, and architectural details. Design intent gets coordinated and sharpened.
5. Construction Documentation (CD)
Detailed drawings, specifications, and permit-ready documents. Everything a contractor needs to build what we designed.
6. Permitting & Approval Assistance
Support through AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) review, including revisions and clarifications as needed.
7. Construction Administration (CA)
Design oversight during construction. Review of shop drawings, site questions, and alignment with design intent so what gets built actually matches what we designed.
Running through every phase: Client Collaboration. Consistent communication throughout, so the project always reflects your vision.
This manual is still in development, and more pages are coming. If you have questions about what a project with Louann Wright Design looks like from start to finish, reach out here: https://www.louannwrightdesign.com/
